Cecil Taylor was born in Chicago on August 27, 1925. He attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and studied with artists and musicians such as Charlie Parker and Earl Hines. In the late 1940s, he played locally with pianist and composer Bud Powell and continued to study with avant-garde jazz musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie and Charles Mingus. By the early 1950s, he had created his own musical style, which he called free jazz
